Chapter 08
What to wear when canvassing.
You want to look professional but also approachable.
Branded clothing
Wear company branded clothing — T-shirt or jacket with the MPP logo. Have your ID badge on and visible; show it to the client as you introduce yourself. This builds trust and shows professionalism. Dave Prewer can order this for you if you don't have one — just send a headshot with your branded top including your shoulders in the shot.
What you need
A clipboard/document folder, a pen and spare pens, a rucksack, leaflets, details of current customers in the area, new customer sheets. Documents can be found in Gloria (MARKETING → Door-to-door canvassing).
Comfortable clothing
You'll be walking a lot. Wear comfortable shoes and breathable clothing, especially in warm weather.
Be prepared for the weather
In cooler months, wear a branded jacket. In warmer months, light, breathable clothing is important — a light shell jacket is recommended.
Chapter 14
Common responses & how to handle them.
"I'm not interested"
"No problem. I can leave a leaflet with you, with information about our services should you need us in the future."
"I already have a cleaner"
"That's great to hear! We're not here to take anyone's business — but can I leave a leaflet in case we offer a service they don't?"
"I'm too busy right now"
"No problem at all! I'll leave a leaflet with you. Give us a call or email if you'd like a free quote for anything."
"I don't need any cleaning right now"
"Not a problem. Would you like a free quote for anything so you know what to expect for the future?" If they say no, offer to leave a leaflet.
"I don't have the budget for this"
"I completely understand! Cleaning can be an unexpected expense. I can leave our details for when your circumstances change."
"I'm not interested in a quote right now"
"Not a problem, I'll leave a leaflet for you with all the details of what we do and how you can contact us when you're ready."
"I don't trust cold callers / door knockers"
"I understand. We're a small family business with 600+ five-star reviews, fully insured and DBS checked. We're honest, reliable, and offer a 100% satisfaction guarantee. Feel free to check us out on Trustpilot or Google — here's our leaflet and contact info."
"I've had a bad experience with cleaners"
"I'm sorry to hear that. We're a small family business with 600+ five-star Trustpilot reviews, fully insured and DBS checked, with a 100% satisfaction guarantee. We'd be happy to provide a free, no-obligation quote and show you how we do things differently."
Chapter 23
Success stories.
Real examples from the field — what worked, why, and what could easily have been missed.
Story 01 · Turning conversation into opportunity
Ash Stevens — Kingswinford
As told by Karen Prewer
During a launch visit to Ash Stevens (Kingswinford and Stourbridge), Karen Prewer was out canvassing with Ash in a well-kept residential area of bungalows. Tidy streets, attractive gardens, friendly elderly residents.
As they approached one property, a neighbouring couple came over to speak to them. They began talking at length about some pylons nearby that they were unhappy with. The conversation lasted around 15 minutes and, at first glance, had nothing to do with exterior cleaning. Karen listened, empathised, and let them feel heard. This built trust naturally.
Once the conversation began to slow, Karen smoothly changed direction with a genuine compliment:
"Anyway, what a beautiful house you have."
She then linked it naturally: "I'm looking at your driveway and I think this would come out really lovely."
The homeowner responded with a common objection: "Oh, we've already cleaned it — this is the best it will come out."
Karen confidently challenged with a wry grin: "I bet you 10p we could make it look even better with our methods." She then offered a free patch test — removing all risk for the customer.
Ash returned that week. The patch test came up beautifully and immediately showed the difference professional equipment and soft washing make. Ash secured the job there and then.
The outcome
- Driveway clean
- Cladding clean
- Gutter clean
- Window clean
Total job value: £480. Because the results were so impressive, neighbouring properties also took notice — leading to two more pressure washing jobs for neighbours, totalling £1,800.
Why this worked
- Conversation builds trust. The pylon chat could've been seen as wasted time — listening created rapport.
- Empathy opens doors. Not rushing to sell made Karen approachable.
- Compliments create natural transitions. Moving from friendly chat to the property felt organic.
- Confidence challenges objections. The "we've already cleaned it" could have ended the opportunity.
- Patch tests remove risk. Doubt turned into proof.
- One yes leads to more. Great results created visibility and additional work.
Story 02 · Taking the opportunity
Claire Ronan — Mid-Cornwall
While cleaning a customer's windows, Claire noticed something hard to ignore. Next door, a neighbour was up a ladder with what looked like several pieces of wood nailed together to form one long stick — using it to knock moss off his roof.
It made Claire uneasy. The ladder looked unstable. All she could think about was how badly things could go if he slipped. She decided to knock on the door.
Claire introduced herself: "Hi, I'm just cleaning your neighbour's windows."
The neighbour quickly replied: "We already have a window cleaner."
Claire reassured her:
"That's great! I'm not here about the windows. I noticed your husband on top of his ladder knocking moss off the roof, and I couldn't ignore it. I'd hate to see someone get hurt."
She laughed and admitted she tries not to watch her husband do DIY because she'd rather not know. Moments later, her husband came to the door.
Claire explained how MPP can clean roofs safely from the ground, without ladders, and apply a biocide treatment to help prevent moss returning.
They were genuinely interested, thankful Claire said something, and agreed to a quote.
Although they haven't accepted yet, this was never just about an instant sale. It was about making people aware there's a safer, professional way to do the job. They'll see Claire or Oli every few weeks while cleaning their neighbour's windows — and when they're ready, MPP will be the first people they think of.
Sometimes, taking the opportunity is simply starting the conversation.
Story 03 · Roof canvassing case study
Aidan — South Belfast & Lisburn
Street outcome: 7 roof cleans secured. First job came directly from canvassing.
This job is a great example of why canvassing works best in areas where we already have visibility. When homeowners can see results and ask neighbours about your work, trust is built far quicker.
1 · The first roof — creating the proof
Aidan secured the first roof clean through canvassing — a semi-detached bungalow. While cleaning was underway, the attached neighbour (who'd previously declined) came outside, saw the transformation in real time, and asked if his roof could be done at the same time.
Lesson: Seeing is believing. One active job can convert an initial "no" into a "yes".
2 · The "can't afford it" customer (who later bought)
Aidan spoke to another homeowner around the corner for about 15 minutes. They got on really well.
"I'm not going to waste your time. I've got two daughters who are very expensive, so I can't afford it."
Instead of walking away, Aidan calmly replied: "Do you want a quote anyway?"
The customer declined at the time. After Aidan completed two roof cleans on the street, that same customer came back and went ahead with a roof clean.
Lesson: A "not now" is not a "never". Always offer a quote. Let visibility and momentum do the selling for you.
3 · The follow-up that almost didn't happen
The neighbour attached to one of the cleaned properties had been given a quote. Despite 5–6 follow-ups, there was no response. Aidan mentioned to the original customer that he could do the neighbour's roof at the same time. Shortly after, the neighbour knocked on the door himself: "Sorry, I've been meaning to get back to you but kept forgetting."
Lesson: Silence doesn't always mean no. Always follow up until you get a clear yes or no.
4 · Picking up work even when people aren't in
One property across the road wasn't home when Aidan canvassed. That house asked a neighbour about the roof clean and Aidan picked the job up through a neighbour referral.
Lesson: Every conversation matters — even when the homeowner isn't there.
Key takeaways
- Canvass areas you've already worked in whenever possible
- One visible job can lead to multiple sales
- Don't assume affordability — always offer a quote
- Follow up consistently until you get a yes or a no
- Neighbours sell your work when you're not there
This street alone produced 7 roof cleans — all driven by visibility, persistence, and good conversations.
Story 04 · High-demo area property
Aidan — South Belfast & Lisburn
Location: High-demographic area. Outcome: £700+ secured work, additional future jobs booked.
We canvassed a well-presented property in a high-demographic area. To help secure the work and stand out from competitors, we offered a free chimney breast clean as an added incentive to get the job over the line.
The work won
This approach resulted in over £700 worth of confirmed work, including: gutter cleaning, conservatory roof cleaning, decking work, small pathway works.
Managing expectations & delivering results
The property had red walls, which we explained upfront may not produce perfect results. Despite this, the finished outcome exceeded expectations — reinforcing trust and satisfaction.
Upsell & neighbour conversion
After completing the work, we went across the road to the neighbouring property, showed before-and-after photos on the iPad, and offered a quote of £130. The neighbour accepted on the spot.
Additional opportunities created
The original customer later phoned to cancel the follow-up appointment — not from dissatisfaction, but because they wanted additional jobs done at the same time, plus work at another property they own elsewhere.
Key takeaways
- Strategic incentives (free chimney breast clean) can unlock larger jobs
- Managing expectations builds credibility and trust
- Visual proof (before & after photos) is a powerful sales tool
- One successful job can quickly lead to multiple properties and repeat work
Overall result: a strong example of how effective canvassing, honest communication, and smart upselling generate immediate revenue and long-term customer value.
Story 05 · The power of weekend call backs
Weekend call backs
One of the best lessons we learned early on was that timing really matters.
During the week, our canvasser would be out knocking doors, introducing the business, offering exterior cleaning services, and leaving details with homeowners. The response was always positive — but there was one problem: so many people simply weren't home.
Most homeowners are out at work all week. They leave early, come back late, and don't always notice exterior cleaners working nearby. Even if the property needs attention, it's not top of mind midweek.
That's when we started doing something simple but incredibly effective: weekend call backs.
Every Saturday or Sunday, we returned to the streets we'd canvassed earlier in the week. The difference was immediate. Suddenly people were home. They had time to chat. They could walk outside and look at their gutters, soffits, or driveway and say: "You know what… that does need doing."
Some of our best customers came from those weekend visits — people who'd completely missed us the first time around, not because they weren't interested, but because they were unavailable.
The customers are there — you just need to catch them at the right time.
Weekend call backs became one of our most reliable ways to turn missed weekday opportunities into real, high-quality jobs.
Story 06 · The value of offering flexible options
Flexible scheduling wins jobs
A homeowner was interested in regular window cleaning. When we explained our standard 4-weekly clean, they paused: "I'd love it done, but every four weeks feels a bit too dear for us."
This is where many people might assume the customer isn't going ahead. Instead, we listened and offered an alternative.
We explained that an 8-weekly clean could work well for customers wanting a lower ongoing cost. We were also honest about the small surcharge and explained why:
- The windows naturally build up more dirt over a longer gap, so the clean takes extra time
- It creates a gap in our regular 4-weekly rota, meaning we have to schedule around that space
Once the customer understood: "That makes complete sense — 8-weekly would suit us better."
Customers aren't always saying no — they just need an option that fits their budget, with clear expectations.
Story 07 · From one roof to six
Stuart Smart — Bournemouth
What started as a simple favour for a mate turned into six roof cleans — all generated from one road.
I was cleaning my friend's roof when it all started. Right at the start of the job, his neighbour's daughter was visiting. She watched the transformation happening in real time and was so impressed she booked her own roof clean. That alone took it to six roofs generated from one street. But it didn't stop there.
As I continued working, the immediate neighbours saw the difference and booked theirs in. Then I moved further down the road onto one of the neighbouring houses — one that was slightly more visible — and even more people started noticing. That visibility secured two more roof cleans. From those two jobs? Even more interest. There are now two additional quotes out from the same run of work.
The breakdown
- 1 initial favour
- 5 roof cleans completed in the same road
- 1 additional clean completed in another territory
- 2 more quotes currently in progress
All generated from a single starting point.
Why it worked
- Doing the job properly
- Creating visible, high-impact results
- Speaking to neighbours
- Letting the transformation speak for itself
Six roof cleans from one road. Five completed in the same stretch. Two more potentially to come. All from starting with one favour. This is what happens when the work speaks for itself.
